Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Alleges Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
One of the co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed how parent company Unilever stopped the launch for an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who established the company with Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he plans to independently develop the controversial flavor within an individual collection highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Between Founders versus Corporate Owner
This latest announcement escalates the continuing tension between the world-famous ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods corporation which acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders have claimed how Unilever and its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Flavor becoming an Emblem of Solidarity
Mr. Cohen stated via an Instagram video that he's developing an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, asking for public suggestions for the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become an emblem of solidarity with Palestinians due to its coloration, that match those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in territories under Israeli control, leading to the parent company transferring the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales in disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series will be developed under Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand that originally created several years back to support ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts and Future Intentions
The founder indicated how he will create additional ice cream flavors that address concerns which the company was prevented from addressing publicly due to Unilever.
This development comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades with the organization, mentioning concerns that the company's autonomy was compromised after corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen commented that "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence so that the company can achieve the social mission, the principles which it was founded on while upholding for decades," he explained to media outlets.
