Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution
Democratic officials voiced outrage after the ex-president alleged a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and asserted they should be taken into custody and penalized "through capital punishment" following their publication of a contentious video.
The Content That Triggered the Debate
The recorded message, released on Tuesday, includes six Democratic congress members who in the past acted in defense or defense positions.
"Like us, you all took an oath to protect and support this constitution," the representatives affirmed in the 90-second video. "Currently, the dangers to our democratic foundation don't only come from overseas, but from within our own country. Our laws are unambiguous, you can decline improper directives, you can refuse illegal orders, you must decline unlawful commands. No one has to follow orders that contravene the law or our founding principles."
Trump's Furious Response
The clip appeared to provoke a heated reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On Thursday morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another message, he stated: "This represents really concerning, and Risky to our Country. Their comments cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Leaders React
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Democratic leadership issued a combined declaration censuring the comments.
"Partisan aggression has no position in the United States," they stated. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all acted our nation with great national pride and excellence. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful death threats against elected officials, and urge Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to guarantee the safety of these members and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these extreme social media posts and recant his dangerous rhetoric before he leads to violence," the statement continued.
Lawmakers' Firm Reaction
The representatives who were featured in the video also published a statement.
"We identify as veterans and defense specialists who value this country and made an vow to defend and uphold the constitution of the United States," they stated. "This commitment is permanent, and we intend to maintain it. No threat, intimidation, or call for violence will prevent us from that sacred obligation."
"What's most telling is that the former president views it punishable by execution for us to restate the statutes," they added. "Our service members should understand that we have their support as they carry out their oath to the national charter and responsibility to obey only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "Every American must come together and denounce the ex-president's demands for our death and partisan aggression. This is a time for principled stance."
Further Governmental Reactions
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's remarks and shared on online networks: "It's important to understand: the former president is requesting the capital punishment of public representatives."
He added: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this right away and absolutely."
The Conservative official justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", describing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "It is very harmful, you have important representatives of the government telling military personnel to ignore directives, I think that is historic in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also according to sources stated to the press that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the crime of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to parse the wording and determine all that."
Executive Branch Statement
During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a journalist, "Does the president want to kill members of Congress?", the White House press secretary replied: "No."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the official said. "You have current representatives of the federal government who worked together to arrange a digital communication to individuals of the US military, to serving soldiers urging them to defy the executive's proper directives."
She stated: "The integrity of our armed forces rests on the command structure, and if that system is broken, it can result in casualties, it can result in confusion, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally promoting."
