An acclaimed author, a leading scholar of the Wild West, has authored a recent book titled Brothers of the Gun, which examines the lives of the famed lawman and the notorious gambler. He expresses displeasure with the well-known line from a renowned movie: “When the myth becomes fact, print the myth.”

“All writer cites it, they just repeat it endlessly,” Gardner says cheerfully. “And it’s truly not accurate. I crafted a story. I aim people to be engaged in the period, but I just get so exhausted of that saying. The myth is legend. It never become reality. People can retell the myth but it doesn't make it fact.”

The Famous Gunfight at the OK Corral

In Tombstone, Arizona, on October 26, 1881, Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday were involved in a shootout that is remembered as the O.K. Corral shootout. Joined by Earp’s brothers, the pair faced the Cowboys, individuals hunted for crime and rustling. In a brief moment, three gang members were killed and Holliday was injured, as were the Earp brothers.

Despite being one of many Wild West clashes between officers and criminals, it joined legend, partly thanks to famous pictures including the John Ford film and the Sturges movie.

Mystery and Variation in Historical Accounts

“A great deal of what we know about it is provable,” Gardner noted of the real shootout and its aftermath. “But I consistently go back to one of the most telling statements, and it’s a very plain comment. Addie Borland, who witnessed the confrontation, stated: ‘I don’t know. It was all a blur.’”

Among the individuals present had conflicting accounts. Testimony from the Spicer hearing is also murky. Witnesses who were friends of the gang were untruthful, and all version is somewhat different. It’s rare when somebody concurs on anything.

“Among the individuals involved were uncertain,” the author continues. “So it’s genuinely difficult to determine it, and it occurred in a brief moment.”

Legend-Building and Cinema Portrayals

Wyatt Earp survived into the movie era, succumbing in the late 1920s at the age of eighty. Originally portrayed on a silent movie screen in 1923, he later became the character of notable classic westerns. In more recent years, he has been portrayed by Kurt Russell in a modern western and Kevin Costner in the 1994 movie.

Gardner delves through such myth-making to uncover the people underneath. His books span the span of the American frontier, from a legendary figure and the sheriff to a civil war guerrilla.

Layered Characters of Earp and Doc Holliday

Originating in Illinois in 1848, Earp was not old enough to serve in the the war, though he sought to do so. When he was two decades old, he became a peace officer in Lamar, Missouri. Errors were made. Earp experienced a tragedy with the passing of his wife, Urilla Sutherland, from illness in the 1870s. Afterward, as a official, he kept revenue he gathered.

“We don't know why he retained it,” he states. “He flees, and ends up in the frontier. He’s apprehended for taking a mount, and then he’s in the state, and he’s managing a brothel. In time he travels back west, and he arrives in a booming town.”

Despite his complex past, Earp excelled as a police officer. Local papers applauded him frequently. In one case, he apprehended a inebriated man who had a large sum on him. He held the cash for the man and handed it back when he let go him from custody.

Contrasting Natures of the Duo

Gardner emphasizes the clear contrast between the two. Wyatt was driven, seeking to improve himself and reach offices like sheriff. Doc, born in the South in the mid-19th century, was a tooth doctor turned gambler. Different from Earp, Holliday never show signs of settling down.

“He just travels from one gambling place to the next one,” he notes. “He doesn't truly evolve. And a portion of that’s his dependence to betting. Some of that is consumption, managing that and self-medicating, whether it’s with drink or eventually opium.”

Influence and Historical Importance

This volume demonstrates a compelling aspect of the American West: the conflict between law and crime, and the attempts of authorities to exert rule over developing societies. The degree of paperwork that came after a violent incident – proceedings, affidavits, directives for payment – might startle those versed with romanticized depictions of the time.

Moreover, Wyatt and Holliday were involved in divisive factional conflicts. Earp was a Republican, while Tombstone sheriff his rival was a adversary, creating a competition for power and position.

Ultimately, he declines to idealize these individuals. Earp and Holliday passed time on either end
