Former UK Soldier Charged of Murdering Kenya Female Appears in Court
A man has appeared in court as extradition proceedings started in the legal matter of the victim Agnes Wanjiru, a female from Kenya who was found dead near a British forces camp in 2012.
Robert Purkiss, thirty-eight, who is a native of the Manchester area, showed up in the Westminster court on Friday, and told the court he would challenge the extradition request. Sources suggest that he was arrested on the evening of Thursday.
A warrant for arrest for the defendant was authorized by a Nairobi court in the month of September. The prosecution stated before the Kenyan court that the individual had been accused of a one count, of killing, and that the government of Kenya would pursue his extradition to answer to accusations.
The defendant previously worked as a medic with the regiment of the Duke of Lancaster, the infantry regiment for the English northwest, including on missions to Afghanistan.
Wanjiru, twenty-one, a hairdresser who had a infant daughter, went missing after a night on the town, and her corpse was discovered 60 days later in the grounds of the lodging where she had last been seen.
No one had earlier been taken into custody or indicted in association with her demise. The arrest of Purkiss was the result of a fresh police investigation, which was initiated after a report in 2021 by a weekly publication, in which the newspaper reached out to several active and retired troops in the unit.
This inquiry has been headed by Kenyan detectives, which, under a bilateral security treaty, maintains prosecutorial power in the legal case.
