Iconic Singer Barry Manilow Will Have Surgery for Lung Cancer.

Barry Manilow announced that he has been diagnosed with a cancerous growth in his lung and will undergo an operation.

Spot Found in Initial Phase

The octogenarian performer, known for a string of high-spirited hits from "Copacabana" cemented his status as one of pop music’s cherished showmen, will have a procedure to take out a section of lung tissue in an effort to fight off the disease, which is detected early.

“For those who have been following, I recently went through six weeks of bronchitis followed by a return of another five weeks.

“Despite the fact that I was recovered from the illness and performing again for my residency, my attentive medical team insisted on an MRI just to be certain that all was clear.

“The MRI detected a cancerous spot on my left side that must be removed. It’s incredible chance (and a fantastic physician) that it was found so early.”

Concert Delays

He has postponed a string of planned live performances, but indicated he would be returning to perform by Valentine’s Day for his long-running engagement in Las Vegas.

He added: “The medical team do not believe it has metastasized and I’m having examinations to confirm their diagnosis. So, that’s it. Chemo is not needed. No radiation. Just chicken soup and classic TV.

“I’m looking forward to until I rejoin my home away from home for our Vegas run for our special weekend performances.”

Professional and Personal Journey

Manilow is currently in the 16th year of a residency on the Las Vegas Strip. The singer has enjoyed a career spanning many years in the public eye and came out as gay in 2017, after marrying his longtime partner and manager privately in 2014.

The couple were in a private relationship for over 35 years. Last year, Manilow reflected on how crucial Kief had been to him during his rise to peak fame in the 1970s.

“When my fame skyrocketed, it was just overwhelming. And, you know, coming home to an vacant room, you can land in a lot of problems if you, you know, you’re by yourself night after night,” he said.

“But I met Garry right around when it was exploding. And I no longer had to go back to those isolated suites. I had somebody to be vulnerable with or to celebrate with.

“I desire that aspiring artists don’t have to go back to those suites by themselves, because you might succumb to pitfalls. I never did. But it was quite isolating until I met Garry. And then it was a shared adventure.”
