Weather experts are saying an icy commencement to the new year, with snow anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Plans Proceed In Spite of Forecasts

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay events are planned to take place, unlike last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," stated the national forecaster.

Fireworks Under Open but Chilly Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Temperatures are due to be chilly, making warm wraps essential, said forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Extensive Weather Alerts for Friday

As we enter Friday, weather warnings have been issued for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• People are advised to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on the transport network.

Readings Forecast to Plummet Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to drop further as snowfall and high winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Alerts Activated

At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this meant the weather could to lead to major effects across medical and care provision. This includes a potential rise in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.

The message for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in good health, preparing for winter conditions is utterly key.
