The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 individuals perished and more than 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.
The victims have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the individuals who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She described the events leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
