UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a girl containing multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct souls, each with unique fears and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes depict the main character navigating a abandoned church.
A World of Individual Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate something primal within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."
The central mechanic involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will switch involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players believes a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one standing might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
