Roughly 50 automobiles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Law enforcement state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then found multiple other vandalized automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests show the substance was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; authorities are currently not informed of any physical harm in association with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the community for tips.
A high-ranking official commented the incident rendered him without words and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This act hits the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, recalling the death of nine people by a shooter aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
